Week 3

     Week 3

This week I was finally able to go over to my grandma's house. She broke her kneecap so had lots of appointments which made planning a little difficult (she is okay) so Wednesday was the first day I was able to sew with her. On one of my trips to Goodwill, I found a dress that I wanted to wear for a prom that my friends were having but when I tried it on, I wanted to bring it in a little bit.

What I thought would be a quick visit with my grandma, turned into a 3+ hour sewing session. It made me realize how hard simple alterations actually were to do (the dress was satin and had lining which are two things that made it difficult). During my internship, one of Adam's clients came in to see if his suit needed any alterations and when he left without needing any, Adam was very relieved. I understand why now.

For my internship this week, I mainly labeled and organized patterns and also helped Adam with pattern making a little bit. I am a person that hates following recipes and I have found that translates over to pattern making as well– I just don't have the patience– but it was fun to be able to watch a pain of pants get drafted and all of the calculations behind it.

I found where the comments were so I'll respond to one now: when you burn a scrap of fabric the main ways to tell what it is made out of is the way it smells, the way it burns and how fast it burns. For example: when wool burns, it smells like burning hair (obviously) and puts itself out pretty quick, and also creates a black coat on the burn edge (most do this but the wool's black coat is very crumbing when touched and that is how you tell).

  1. I'm glad you got to sew with your grandmother finally, Zoe, and I am glad to hear she is doing okay after breaking her kneecap. :( Can you show us pictures of the dress you worked on with your grandmother? Are those photos of Adam's space? How are your other sewing projects going? Excited to keep following along with your journey!

  2. Tailor and alterations are SO MUCH WORK. Fitting that human form is just tricky all around. I think its amazing when an off-the-rack garment fits someone right away. I'm glad to hear you are learning about different fabrics and sewing - its a lifetime of enjoyment and self-sufficiency! Can't wait to see what you come up with this week. We Miss you!!!!
