Week 4

 Week 4

This week I spent Monday through Wednesday at my grandma's house and worked on a single piece the whole time. There is this dress (image down below) that I have wanted for so long but the price is a little steep so I've never ended up getting it. However, last week I went to Goodwill and found two pairs a leggings that seemed like similar texture and material to the dress, and I had an idea.

We had to deconstruct the leggings first, so it took way more time then I was expecting, and since we work working with raw material, we didn't have enough fabric replicate the dress exactly (we had to make a tight skirt instead of a flowey one), but all in all, I really like how our dress turned out! It was also great to work with a serger so much.

My goals from week one were to understand more about what it exactly takes to have your own fashion design studio, more about the fashion industry in general, and garment crafting techniques to help me create a better foundation. I only was in the studio for a month, but I learned so much from that experience– from talking with him about his own experience and also being able sit in on the business part of his life and get a first hand view of what it is life. I don't think I got as much insight into the fashion industry in general, but I did get to learn super specific sewing techniques that I will definitely use in my future.

I would defiantly recommend this senior project (specifically the internship) to those interested, because it offers insight into being a clothing designer and that is something that is really important to understand if you are interested in that as a career. It also was really eye opening about how much time and energy goes into creating one piece of clothing, which is something to be very mindful about when thinking about the cost of a garment and how ethically made it was. I had so much fun and learned so much this last month, it was such a great experience!

  1. I'm so glad to hear that this was a beneficial experience, Zoe, and that you learned a lot. It sounds like you are walking away with lots of new skills and knowledge. Did what you learned affect what you think you want to do in the future at all? Did it help you narrow your interests? How was working with the serger? I am so curious how your legging-turned-dress turned out! Thanks for letting me follow along on your journey!
