Week 1
Week One
For my senior project, I decided to split my time between interning at a local clothing designer's studio, learning how to use a serger and different sewing techniques, and working by myself on different clothing pieces. I have slowly become more and more interested in fashion and sewing and especially this year, since extra time has become abundant, it has been one of my main pastimes. When we started to think about what we wanted to do for our senior, I knew for certain I wanted to keep with this interest, but I didn't know for sure exactly what I wanted to focus on.
I reached out to a fashion designer, Adam Arnold, to see if I would be able to get an internship with him and after an interview I ended up getting it! Unfortunately, he wasn't able to fill all of the required hours for this project, but it also gave me the opportunity to broaden my scope and explore sewing in deeper depth. My final plan consisted of working with Adam and learning about what it takes to be a designer, learning more about the inter workings of sewing techniques with my grandma, and exploring my own design style.
This was my first week of working at the studio and it has been a really fun experience. Although it was exhausting at some points– like standing for 5 hours cutting and grommeting– I have also learned a lot already from Adam about how to distinguish fabrics from each other (by burning) and had great conversations about his experience as a fashion designer. My main goal for my internship is to understand more about what it exactly takes to have your own fashion design studio, more about the fashion industry in general, and hopefully garment crafting techniques to help me create a better foundation.
I haven't worked with my grandma yet, but I have been planning specific garments I want to potentially make (my mom has also requested that we hem her curtains) and I am very excited to start with her. I have a lot of fabric that I can't work with with out a serger so I'm also very excited to have access to one and to learn how to use it. I am also planning on getting more fabrics for the clothes I want to make so I might go with her to a fabric store to get them, or go to some thrift stores to up cycle textiles that I get there. I have so many ideas!
Hi Zoë! I have to ask: how does burning distinguish fabrics from one another? I'm fascinated. I'm so happy that you've created a senior project that allows you to really dive deep into an area of interest and that will get your mom's curtains hemmed!
ReplyDeleteThat dress is super cute - what other garments are hoping to make this month?
