Week 4

Week 4     This week I spent Monday through  Wednesday at my grandma's house and worked on a single piece the whole time. There is this dress (image down below) that I have wanted for so long but the price is a little steep so I've never ended up getting it. However, last week I went to Goodwill and found two pairs a leggings that seemed like similar texture and material to the dress, and I had an idea.      We had to deconstruct the leggings first, so it took way more time then I was expecting, and since we work working with raw material, we didn't have enough fabric replicate the dress exactly (we had to make a tight skirt instead of a flowey one), but all in all, I really like how our dress turned out! It was also great to work with a serger so much.     My goals from week one were  to understand more about what it exactly takes to have your own fashion design studio, more about the fashion industry in general, and gar...

Week 3

Week 3      This week I was finally able to go over to my grandma's house. She broke her kneecap so had lots of appointments which made planning a little difficult (she is okay) so Wednesday was the first day I was able to sew with her. On one of my trips to Goodwill, I found a dress that I wanted to wear for a prom that my friends were having but when I tried it on, I wanted to bring it in a little bit.       What I thought would be a quick visit with my grandma, turned into a 3+ hour sewing session. It made me realize how hard simple alterations actually were to do (the dress was satin and had lining which are two things that made it difficult). During my internship, one of Adam's clients came in to see if his suit needed any alterations and when he left without needing any, Adam was very relieved. I understand why now.     For my internship this week, I mainly labeled and organized patterns and also helped Adam with...

Week 2

Last week I learned how to properly sew on a button (leaving a space between the Botton and fabric so it doesn't pull on the button hole and so there are no loose threads). It was a great time to learn this trick because this week I got a men's XL blazer from goodwill and made it into a two piece. I had to rearrange the buttons on the skirt and I used the method I had learned in my internship to do it!     This week I was able to sit in during a fitting and I got to watch how it worked and how the coat was adjusted after the fitting. I have been able to experience a little of what it is like to be a fashion designer– the good and the stressful– but this was the first time I experienced designer to client interactions and I think this is very important part of my learning (now I have a more well rounded experience).     I also got a lot done this week on my own. I finished the blazer set (above), I got an oversized collard shirt fro...

Week 1

Week One      For my senior project, I decided to split my time between interning at a local clothing designer's studio, learning how to use a serger and different sewing techniques, and working by  myself  on different clothing pieces. I have slowly become more and more interested in fashion and sewing and especially this year, since extra time has become abundant, it has been one of my main pastimes. When we started to think about what we wanted to do for our senior, I knew for certain I wanted to keep with this interest, but I didn't know for sure exactly what I wanted to focus on.       I reached out to a fashion designer, Adam Arnold, to see if I would be able to get an  internship with him and after an interview I ended up getting it! Unfortunately, he wasn't able to fill all of the required hours for this project, but it also gave me the opportunity to broaden my scope an...
